This fragrant apple chutney features the warm, bold flavor of freshly grated whole nutmeg and aromatic whole cloves. Simmered slowly with apples, ginger, and apple cider vinegar, it’s the perfect fall condiment β delicious served with roasted meats, cheese boards, or spread on toasted bread.
Note: This recipe does not include time for cooling before storing.
Ingredients
- 4 large apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
- 1 small red onion, finely chopped
- Β½ cup apple cider vinegar
- β cup coconut sugar
- ΒΌ teaspoon sea salt
- Β½ teaspoon freshly grated True Organic whole nutmeg
- 6 True Organic whole cloves
- 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, minced
- Β½ teaspoon True Organic cinnamon powder
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ΒΌ cup golden raisins
Directions
- Prepare the spice base:
In a medium saucepan, combine apple cider vinegar, coconut sugar, and salt over medium heat. Stir gently until sugar dissolves. - Add the fruit and spices:
Stir in the diced apples, red onion, ginger, lemon juice, cinnamon, and golden raisins. Add the grated nutmeg and whole cloves. Stir to combine. - Simmer the chutney:
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover partially and simmer for 45β50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and the mixture thickens. - Final touches:
Remove whole cloves (or leave them in for a rustic look). Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. - Cool and store:
Let cool completely before storing in sterilized jars in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
