This bag of star anise is packed really well and has a strong, rich aroma the moment you open it. There’s a lot in here—easily enough to get you through a whole holiday season, maybe even a couple—so unless you go through spices like a Viking at Yule, you’ll want to tuck the extra into a sturdier container. I’m planning to use mine for mulled cider and simmer pots at Christmastime, and the scent is exactly what I hoped for: that classic anise smell that leans toward black licorice.A good number of the pods are broken or a little wonky, so if you need picture-perfect stars for decorating baked goods, you’ll have to pick through the bag. But for recipes and potpourri, the broken pieces actually seem to boost the fragrance, so I’m not bothered by it. Overall, it’s a generous, strongly aromatic bag of organic star anise without any mystery chemicals—just the good stuff!

Large and potent

These star anise pods are HUGE! I got them for my girlfriend to use in her baking and for her simmer pots and they are ginormous as well as incredibly potent in both smell and taste! When added to the simmer pot she did for Samhain, the entire house smelled of licorice (not complaining) and it lasted long after the rest was removed. I was also impressed by how intact these were - absolutely perfect and well preserved in the package! There were very few broken stars, which has only helped them to stand out in everything we've used them for. I will be getting these again for sure!
